Bathurst Carrera Cup Recap
Round 7 of the Championship has been run and done at Mount Panorama, Bathurst. Unfortunately we didn’t get as many racing laps as we hoped due to torrential rain. However, the laps we did get sure were exciting!!
We had one 50 minute practice session on Thursday to come to grips with the circuit and car on a wet track. We were fast right out of the box and ended the session third fastest, but in the fence… It wasn’t a heavy hit as I just went a bit wide at the Cutting. However, it did a fair bit of damage and the eight hour break we had between practice and qualifying wasn’t so bad after all. The McElrea team did an awesome job fixing it up and we were ready to roll come Qualifying.
The sun came out for Qualifying for a fast paced 20 minute session. We had a few dramas during the session after loosing my front splitter down Conrod straight and an actuator that malfunction. We dug deep though and put our issues behind us to ensure we maximised everything we had at that point in time. Once the chequred flag dropped we were P4 on the time sheets. I was very happy with a second row start all things considered!
Race One was a wet one… Actually, Race One was the worst conditions I have every driven in!! We could hardly see through the windscreen and the standing water on the track made for some high speed aquaplaning and some very close calls. It was an awesome feeling though. I felt like all of my senses were massively heightened and every part of my was focused on just driving the car. We ended up P4 after some very close battles on track.
Race Two was unfortunately cancelled as the heavens really opened up and the conditions were too bad to race in.
Race Three had a delayed start. We were on slicks on a half damp track. Starting P4 we made up one spot at the first corner and I felt very comfortable and confident behind the wheel. After three laps were were the fastest car on track, catching the leaders very quickly. Unfortunately an incident further back in the pack brought the safety car out and put the race on hold, ultimately bringing out the red flag and stopping the race. This meant no points were awarded…
We have one week until our final round of the year. We are positioned perfectly to take out the title. However, there is no room for complacency. We are full steam ahead going into the Gold Coast and I absolutely cannot wait! Hopefully I’ll see you there :D
Cheers,
Harri
