Townsville Carrera Cup Review

We have reached the halfway point of the 2022 Porsche Carrera Cup Australia Championship! As much as Townsville was one of our more testing rounds, we still came away with lots of positives and even more drive to tackle the back half of the season.

Friday saw us complete two practice sessions followed by Qualifying and a Race on Saturday. Unfortunately in Qualifying I was just off the pace and placed in 10th position. I was only 0.3s off Pole, but that goes to show how stacked the pro field is this year.

I knew it was going to be hard work in the first race of the weekend to fight our way back to the front. However, I didn’t expect to be caught up in a car park at Turn 1. Contact between a few of the front drivers saw almost 10 cars trip over each other at the first corner and plummet down the order. I ended the first lap in 21st position and managed to salvage 17th position by the time the safety car came out a lap later. The remainder of the race was behind safety car and we crossed the line in 17th.

In Race 2 we made a great start and worked our way up to 8th, but after some light contact with another car my front splitter disconnected and I dropped a couple of spots. It was our longer race of the weekend, and after battling the car and the drivers behind me for the 20 lap race we crossed the line in 10th.

The final race of the weekend was all about salvaging points. I raced hard and fought my way to 6th, but ultimately crossed the line in 7th to round out the weekend.

All in all, it was tricky and not everything went out way. But that is just part of the sport and makes the weekends that do go our way feel even sweeter. On top of it all, we still salvaged some good points and came away still in control of the championship!

Fortunately, I don’t have to wait long to get back behind the wheel as we head to Tailem Bend for Round 5 of the Championship in just two and a half weeks!

Thank you to everyone that sent me messages over the weekend and thank you to the McElrea team and all of my Partners for their amazing support.

Cheers,
Harri
